The most probable author, however, especially when the internal evidence is considered, is Thomas Haemmerlein, known also as Thomas a Kempis, from his native town of Kempen, near the Rhine, about forty miles north of Cologne. Many manuscripts scattered throughout Europe ascribe the book to Jean le Charlier de Gerson, the great Chancellor of the University of Paris, who was a leading figure in the Church in the earlier part of the fifteenth century. But Hilton seems to have died in 1395, and there is no evidence of the existence of the work before 1400. In England there exist many manuscripts of the first three books, called Musica Ecclesiastica, frequently ascribed to the English mystic Walter Hilton. Francis of Assisi, who was born thirty years after the death of St. Bernard of Clairvaux but the fact that it contains a quotation from St. Manuscripts of the Latin version survive in considerable numbers all over Western Europe, and they, with the vast list of translations and of printed editions, testify to its almost unparalleled popularity. Its exact date and its authorship are still a matter of debate. The treatise Of the Imitation of Christ appears to have been originally written in Latin early in the fifteenth century. This brand new series introduces Angela Braddock - Ohio born, but Texas raised heroine - who returns to Amish country in Ohio to run her recently deceased aunt's quilt shop. I hope listeners let Tantor Media know of the problem before the second book was narrated. They consistently mispronounced Berlin, and I corrected the narrator every time she mispronounced it. I listened to the audio version of the book, and it's clear neither the narrator nor the producer thought to check the pronunciation of towns in Holmes County. Her dog, a "Frenchie," fears birds of all sorts, providing some amusing moments. This first in the series is full of engaging characters who will keep readers coming back for more. When the man next door who tries to lay claim to shop's deed turns up dead in the shop's storeroom, Angie feels she needs to do a little investigating to keep herself out of jail. The small Holmes County town where it is located consists mostly of Amish-owned businesses, and some people, including the woman who managed the shop while her aunt's health failed, want to keep it that way. Angie moves from Dallas to Ohio's Amish country when she inherits her Amish aunt's quilt shop. But such a regress of concurrent actualizers would constitute a hierarchical causal series, and such a series cannot regress infinitely.
6/6/2023 0 Comments Platos the symposiumThe Symposium is a dialogue – a form used by Plato in more than 30 works – however unlike in many of his other works the majority of it is a series of speeches from different characters. This dialogue is one of Plato's major works, and is appreciated for both its philosophical content and its literary qualities. Eros is almost always translated as "love", and the English word has its own varieties and ambiguities that provide additional challenges to the effort to understand the Eros of ancient Athens. The extraordinary elevation of the concept of love raises a question of whether some of the most extreme extents of meaning might be intended as humor or farce. It is seen as transcending its earthly origins and attaining spiritual heights. In the Symposium, Eros is recognized both as erotic lover and as a phenomenon capable of inspiring courage, valor, great deeds and works, and vanquishing man's natural fear of death. The speeches are to be given in praise of Eros, the god of love and desire. The men include the philosopher Socrates, the general and political figure Alcibiades, and the comic playwright Aristophanes. It depicts a friendly contest of extemporaneous speeches given by a group of notable men attending a banquet. The Symposium ( Ancient Greek: Συμπόσιον, Sympósion ) is a philosophical text by Plato, dated c. Plato from Raphael's The School of Athens (1509–1511) 6/6/2023 0 Comments Pjo book 4In short, it reveals whether or not you are a half-blood Deity or not. But when she arrives, she discovers that the letter she received was several years old. Now, nearing the end of her time there, Olivia receives a letter from an uncle she’s never met, her father’s older brother, summoning her to his estate, a place called Gallant. She grew up at Merilance School for Girls. Her mother vanished all at once, and her father by degrees, and her voice was a thing she never had to start with. Sixteen-year-old Olivia Prior is missing three things: a mother, a father, and a voice. So when this one was promised to be Crimson Peak vibes, I was cautious but excited. Granted I have yet to actually finish the Shades of Magic trilogy but I’ll still automatically buy anything she releases. Her work although hit and miss for me is still always enjoyable. ‘She knows too well what’s it like when people take one weakness and define you by it.’Ī new Victoria Schwab book always gives me a little giddy boost. 6/6/2023 0 Comments The glass spare seriesAs such, she and her brothers are usually forgotten, dismissed as spares, while the whole attention goes to the firstborn and heir, Owen. She’s the fourth daughter in the Northern Arrod royal household, and the youngest of four siblings. I will gladly read more about her in future books, if given the opportunity. I loved to know about them, especially about the queen, given her past as a wanderer, and the way she kept her traditions, even after marrying into royalty. For one, Wil has both her parents, and each of them has their own personality and history, strengths and weaknesses, and well-defined reasons to be in the story. I loved the fact that this book went beyond the classic fantasy tropes. That was enough for me to paint in my head the whole steampunk picture for this world, which is absolutely amazing, and I can’t wait to keep exploring it along with Wil, Loom, Zay, and the rest of this amazing cast of characters. As I read I was surprised to find steampunk elements that I was not expecting at all, like the mention of trains and electricity, and of course, Wil’s data goggles. The day you were born, it shrank away in fear.’ ”įrom the very start, the story is so powerful and promising, you just have to read the whole book. “ On many nights in Wil’s childhood, the queen would hold her and rock her to sleep, and she would whisper, ‘Death itself is no match for you. 6/5/2023 0 Comments Two dogs by ian falconerAgent: Conrad Rippy, Levine Plotkin & Menin. These are Ian Falconer’s first all-new characters since Olivia, and Two Dogs is sure to equally capture the hearts of readers everywhere. The artist’s insight into the inner lives of dogs (“Hurl yourself at the door and bark!”) and gift for capturing their characteristic movements tick all the visual storytelling boxes, making this dachshund’s-day-out story a delight. From Ian Falconer, Caldecott Honor winner and 1 New York Times bestselling creator of the Olivia series, comes a dashingly delightful picture book about. An afternoon of guilty pleasure unfolds, from rolling in raccoon poop to discovering a small hole to excavate: “Then they heard the car drive up.” Falconer’s spreads not only share the sly wit of his previous piglet heroine’s exploits they offer beauty, too, in classically drawn forms (“Indeed, they look like little Roman emperors,” the opening sequence observes) as the dogs romp across crisp, full-color backgrounds of grass and greenery in an exuberant display of canine choreography. Desperate for adventure, they break out into the garden. Perry steals Augie’s ball (“The ball was very important to Augie”) Augie gets revenge via piano (“PLEASE, AUGIE, NO! NOT THE PIANO!”), pounding the keys as black bars of music thunder across the page. Left alone inside all day, they squabble. In Falconer’s ( Olivia) new picture book, Perry and Augie are matching dachshund housemates-lithe, hilarious, and terribly bored. 6/5/2023 0 Comments Forrest gump de winston groomIt was Forrest Gump - and the success of the 1994 movie starring Tom Hanks in the iconic role of Gump, as well as Sally Field and Gary Sinise - that earned him widespread fame and some financial success.
